Gauguin was a stockbroker in Paris. Good salary, wife, five kids, a hobby he loved. Then the market crashed in 1882 and he decided painting was no longer the hobby. It was the plan. He followed his wife Mette and the children to Copenhagen. Tried selling tarpaulins. Lasted a few months. He saw what a normal life in Denmark looked like and walked away from it. Went back to France. Chose Brittany. Cheap living, other painters around, room to become someone else. This is from that chapter. Nothing here matches what Brittany actually looks like. The roofs aren't red. The fields aren't this warm.
