We have no idea who lived in this house. Just a gardener somewhere in Antibes that Monet decided to paint in 1888. But here is what we do know. Monet was completely obsessed with gardens. He spent decades of his life designing his own in Giverny. He ordered rare seeds from Japan. He hired full time gardeners. He rerouted water to build his lily ponds. The man thought about plants the way most painters think about paint. So when he saw this little house with its bare trees and overgrown yard overlooking the sea, something clicked.
