You think this looks casual. Like he just dropped some flowers in a bowl and started painting. That's exactly what he wanted you to think. Every single thing here was a decision. The dying sunflowers next to fresh roses. The yellow against that red wall. Nothing in the center. He was in Paris in 1886 studying color theory and this bowl of flowers was his laboratory. Old Dutch masters would have centered everything. Symmetrical. Polite. Van Gogh shoved it all off balance because he wanted your eyes to keep moving. And they do. Nothing accidental here.
