Those are Van Gogh's own words. He wrote that to his brother Theo from Arles in the spring of 1888. He had just left two years of grey Paris behind and the orchards were blooming everywhere around him. He started painting them almost in a panic because he knew the blossoms wouldn't last. This is one of those paintings. You can feel how fast he was working.
