Monet: Before the Haystacks
Before his haystacks series, wheat wasn't really Monet's subject. Fields were for poppies, for women with parasols. This one is a stranger in his usual scenery. But the moment behind it matters: after losing Camille, he couldn't paint people anymore, so he turned to raw nature instead. This field was just there. A few poppies still sneak in. Poplars line the back. The wheat will be harvested soon. Monet's second act is already starting.
