Van Gogh painted these fishing boats on the beach at Saintes-Maries. He had just arrived and was completely overwhelmed by the Mediterranean light. One of the boats has a name written on it. Amitié. Friendship. Out of all the boats on that beach, that's the one he chose. The man who struggled his whole life to connect with people put a boat called Friendship right at the center of his canvas. Some people name boats after things they have.
